Update: Missing children return home
With dark storm clouds overhead, there were fears that a thunderstorm could easily cause flash flooding and turn the drain pipe into a swirling torrent of water
All 5 children thought to have been trapped in a storm water drain in Daisy Lane last night (Monday, November 17) are safe and sound, and back home.
Police went around to their homes last night and found them all there.
This after a massive rescue operation was carried out by police and ambulance rescue personnel.
The last two children who were in the drainage system made their way out in Smartiesville.
Search & rescue officer Jacques Meyer and a Sharaj paramedic initially conducted a search of the drain to locate the missing children. The jaws of life were used to cut an opening in the drain to allow rescue personnel access. With dark storm clouds overhead, there were fears that a thunderstorm could easily cause flash flooding and turn the drain pipe into a swirling torrent of water.
Heroic officer Jacques Meyer, accompanied by a rescue paramedic, made his way down into the dark storm water drain. Both were unaware that, at this stage, the children had already left the drainage system almost a kilometre away in Smartiesville.
Police and Public Safety were also on scene to help locate the children. After the search was called off, police officers went to all the homes and located the ‘missing’ children, who were totally unaware of the massive rescue operation.
