Sewage flow causes stench

Hidden on a vacant plot of land on Scott Street, just before Boundary Road, sewage was found leaking from a manhole.
Jaykumal Rugbhee, a resident who lives nearby, said the leak started approximately two months ago and despite having reported the matter to the municipality, nothing has been done about it.
“Some days it smells so bad, you can’t even sit outside on your veranda. I smelled it and decided to take a walk to see where it came from. It was then that I found the sewage leak,”
Mr Rugbhee explained, adding that the stench and sewage flow increased drastically whenever it rained.
While most of the spill was onto the vacant stand, Mr Rugbhee said he had noticed that it occasionally flowed into a stream running through the land. “It is very unhygienic and something needs to be done. It is especially bad after it has rained,” he claimed.
The municipality’s communication department was contacted several times regarding the issue, but no comment was forthcoming at the time of going to print.
