Hundreds of fish found dead in Klip River

So, is Ladysmith's water safe to drink?

A fisherman who was fishing in the Klip River yesterday (December1) was horrified when he came across hundreds of dead fish, both large and small, floating in the water.

Today (Tuesday), 3 dead fish have been spotted in the river. Many more must have been pulled by the current into rock pools and further downstream.

This begs the question: Is there something toxic in the river and if so, could it kill human beings as well if consumed? Many people rely on the river as a source of food, catching and eating fish. What will happen to these people if they too ingest the poison in the dead fish?

In addition, water from the Klip River is extracted for drinking purposes in Ladysmith. So, at the end of the day, is Ladysmith’s water safe to drink?
