On the subject of “zero discrimination”, the Endumeni Mayor’s office, together with Operation Sukuma Sakhe, will be commemorating World AIDS Day.
The event is being held at Sithembile, Glencoe today (Wednesday) where a number of Sukuma Sakhe stake-holders will be addressing the community on the importance of protecting oneself from this disease. The day will begin with the visit to the Dundee Taxi rank where they will be addressing and educating taxi drivers on the importance of the prevention of HIV/AIDS.
The programme will proceed to the Sithembile Ward 3 War Room to evaluate the statistics on the HIV/AIDS pandemic and lastly the main event will be held at the Empisini area of Sithembile.
This day is held to not only educate people about the disease, but also to remember and symphathise with those who are affected by it.
Mrs Duma of the Department of Health mentioned during the preparation meetings that “KwaZulu Natal is said to be the province with the highest rate of people affected by HIV/AIDS”. She said the district needs to work harder in order to assist in decreasing the rate in the province. She also mentioned that the distribution of condoms has to be done effectively and clinics should not be anxious to distribute these to people.
