Two explosions rock town as ATM bombers strike
Reportedly, the culprits used too much explosives, damaging the ATM's beyond recognition and sending debris flying nearly 50 metres away.
In a coordinated operation, four suspects bombed and robbed both ABSA Automated Teller Machines (ATM’s) at Pioneer Park Pick ‘n Pay at approximately 1.15am this morning.
Surrounding areas were shaken by two loud explosions in quick succession. Upon investigation, it was discovered both ATM’s had suffered severe damage.
Newcastle SAPS members responded to the scene within minutes, and gave chase to the suspects who made their getaway in a Toyota Corolla, believed to be brown or gold in colour without number plates.
The suspects were armed with rifles and assaulted a security guard.
“They took my radio and made me lay down on the ground,” said the guard. “They took my cellphone and switched it off before putting it down on the ground next to me.”
The guard was treated for shock by ER24 Newcastle paramedics.
Reportedly, the culprits used too much explosives, damaging the ATM’s beyond recognition and sending debris flying nearly 50 metres away.
They were prepared.
According to reports, three of the suspects were inside a bar situated directly adjacent to the ATM’s earlier in the night. The staff member on duty reportedly contacted his superior to assist him with locking up, as the men had seemed ‘suspicious’ to him.
The men then waited for the area to be clear of bystanders before going to work. It is believed they used dynamite.
A team of forensic specialists and a bomb disposal team were on scene to process the crime scene. It is believed they discovered that only one of the dye packs inside the money boxes actually exploded.
The bombers made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.
