The intrepid organisers of the Crisis Centre feeding scheme are not giving up without a fight. When the scheme was forcibly closed on December 31, the mainly elderly women who traded in plastic discard for a much-needed voucher for yoghurt, maas and juice were distraught.

Some marched on the municipality to protest but this did not really help.

Carol Bradley who runs the feeding scheme said they could not stand to turn-away the hundreds who still flocked to the Centre in the hope of getting food.

“it is the only meal they get – its a pity those who complained about the scheme did not come address these poor folk,” she said.

Carol then moved the feeding area to under a large tree behind the graveyard, down the road from the Crisis Centre on Birkett Street.

Hundreds were there today to collect their yoghurt, juice and maas.  “What we do now is ask them to drop off their plastic goods at the Centre  where they will collect a voucher.  Then they walk down to under the large tree to fetch their food.”
