Illegal hunters arrested

Police were alerted as was the SPCA and a group of volunteers including a UK film crew who are here doing a documentary on illegal hunting in South Africa

Two men were arrested early yesterday for illegal hunting with dogs.  The men were caught by police in the vicinity of Pro Nobis School near Tandy Street.

Earlier, residents on Illovo Drive had heard the panic-stricken cries from a duiker.  They rushed outside to see three men and a pack of Greyhound-type dogs around the small animal.

The dogs were biting the duiker and at least one of the men hitting the animal.

Two of the men were arrested while a third managed to get away.  The dead duiker has taken away by police.  There was uncertainity as what to do with the dogs.

Pleas to have the dogs put down fell on deaf ears – with no place to keep the dogs, it was decided to return the dogs to the owners once the animals had been photographed.

However, the men have been charged with illegal hunting and trespassing on municipal property.
