Disgraced former police chief, Jackie Selebi, dies
Jackie Selebi, who would have been 65 in March, died today after suffering from a long illness.
According to a report by SAPA, disgraced ex-police chief Jackie Selebi, who would have been 65 in March, passed away this morning after a long illness.
Mr Selebi was found guilty of corruption charges relating to up to R1.2-million in 2010 and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
He served less than a year of his sentence at the Pretoria Central Prison.
A week after his arrival at Pretoria Central in December 2011, he was taken to the city’s Steve Biko Hospital, where Wynanda Coetzee, his lawyer, described his condition as “quite serious”.
She said her client’s illness “will not get better”.
Correctional services spokesman Sibongile Khumalo said at the time that Selebi was a sick man who needed to undergo tests, but did not divulge any details.
According to media reports, Mr Selebi has suffered from diabetes and had kidney problems.
