Decapitated boy drowned before he was mutilated
Shocking new information has come to light that could change the landscape of the investigation from that of murder, to an accidental death.
The province was shocked and horrified after the discovery of a child’s body in a rural area near Paulpietersburg.
The young boy was found decapitated and eviscerated near a river close to his father’s home in December. The body is believed to be that of six-year-old Khanyisani Khumalo, an Utrecht resident who was visiting his father when he went missing.

A doctor in Durban who has conducted the post mortem has declared the cause of death to be drowning. This was confirmed by Major Vusumusi Mbatha, spokesperson for Vryheid SAPS.
“Previously we were investigating a case of murder,” he told the Amajuba Eyethu. “Currently, we are still waiting for DNA test results before consulting with the family on how we shall proceed.”
DNA tests were conducted to confirm the identity of the small body, as the head still has not been found.
The exact cause of the mutilation is yet to be confirmed.
