BREAKING NEWS: Pensioners targeted in brazen robbery
"They went straight for the TV. I found them removing my television from the wall; one of them attacked me with a knife as I walked in."
Two unidentified suspects wielding knives burgled the home of an elderly couple at around 6am this morning.
According to a source, the suspects simply walked up the front yard and through the front door, attempting make off with the family’s television. The couple’s son and a worker had left the premises minutes before the incident.
“I saw them just walk in, I went in behind them thinking maybe my wife had asked them to do something. They went straight for the TV. I found them removing my television from the wall; one of them attacked me with a knife as I walked in. I managed to get away and call to my wife to get help,” said Tony Govender, who sustained a knife-wound to his forehead during the encounter.
Mr Govender’s wife, Indrani, said the suspects confronted them with knives when she came to find out what was going on. “I heard my husband call for help, when I saw what was happening I managed to push him into the bedroom and look the door behind us.”
A neighbour heard the couple’s cries for help and phoned the police and notified the couple’s son about what was happening. The suspects were subsequently chased down by the police and community members. Realising they were being chased, the suspects fled towards Hilldrop, ditching their loot in the process. The suspects lost their pursuers in the veld and managed to escape.
The television was recovered and dusted for fingerprints.
Mrs Govender says this was not the first time something was stolen from her house. “Before this, lights have gone missing from my garden a day after they were installed, and an entire laundry bucket, including the water in it just disappeared.”
Mr Govender is certain he would be able to identify the suspects and said it was not the first time he had seen them in the area. “If I see them again I would recognise them. They have been frequenting this area for a while now.”
Police spokesperson, Captain Shooz Magudulela, said: “No arrests have been made yet. Police experts have taken samples for further investigation.”
He also urged the community to come forward with any information regarding the case.
