Hockey
On Saturday, the DHS first girls’ hockey team, The Spartans, took part in the annual Spar Hockey Tournament hosted by Pionier. With very little warm-up time the girls unfortunately lost their first game against Ferrum, however, they then went on to beat Utrecht, Newcastle and Vryheid, which meant a place in the semi-final. After the last pool game, the girls had a five minute break and then went onto play a physically challenging semi-final against St Dominic’s Academy.
The girls played with courage and dug deep to emerge as 1-0 victors. This meant a place in the finals against their first opponents: Ferrum. Dead-tired after playing two games back-to-back, the girls bravely took to the fields with the support of all the other schools. It was a fast-paced, exciting, evenly contested match-up with neither side backing down. Ferrum finally got a goal in, giving them a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, a superb goal by Captain Surina Gregory, from a short corner, was disallowed, which meant DHS was unfortunately placed as Tournament runners-up. The spirit, skill, team-work and utter dedication by these hockey girls shone through with many supporters and spectators paying multiple compliments to the team.
Rugby – First Team
DHS took on Hoërskool Vrede at the the Sarel Cilliers Rugby day, held on Saturday. The inexperienced DHS side which has seen many changes since last season showed lots of individual talent and ability, but they were unfortunately beaten by a more experienced Vrede, 19 to 5. The team showed moments of brilliance when the boys came together as a unit and this bodes well for the season ahead. Come out and support DHS on their home field, when they take on Newcastle High, on March 7.
