SPCA growls at dog peddlers
Described as a vigilant and affectionate dog, Brutus needs a loving family. "He is fully grown, alert and would make a wonderful watchdog and companion."
The sun beat down mercilessly on him. There was no water to quell his thirst; his needs not taken into account.
Unloved, unwanted, the dog faced an uncertain future as his owners tried to pawn him off alongside the road.
“Do not purchase dogs alongside the road.
“If you come across this type of behaviour, remove the dog and bring it immediately to the SPCA and report the matter,” encouraged Heather Gero, SPCA manageress.
These stern words were issued after two young boys allegedly tried to sell a Yorkshire Terrier. Fortunately, the dog was removed from their possession by a concerned resident.
According to Mrs Gero, the dog was in such a poor condition, its rescuer was forced to shave its hair.
“Its hair was terribly knotted and could not be untangled. After she cleaned the dog up, the woman surrendered it to the SPCA as there was a chance her dogs would hurt it,” Mrs Gero claimed.
Once in the SPCA’s care, the diminutive terrier earned himself the name of Brutus. “We named him Brutus because he is rather feisty,” Mrs Gero chuckled.
