Businessman found not guilty after brutal police arrest

Mr Imraan Sader still has handcuff marks on his arms to this day

Mr Imraan Sader, the owner of RS Butchery, won his case today (Monday) in court after police wrongfully arrested him on September 14 last year.

The call came in to SAPS as the theft of a cell-phone and that a security guard had been assaulted. According to Mr Sader, police officers stormed into the building, handcuffed him and dragged him out of his own shop.

Mr Sader was arrested and put into a cell to spend the night. He was released the next day on R500 bail. Mr Sader says he should not have been arrested in the first place, as he had done nothing wrong.

Police thought he was the one who had assaulted a security guard. “My business sustained losses due to the injuries I sustained and police didn’t even provide any explanation for barging in and hauling me off like that,” he says. The official police response for the arrest was HERE

Mr Sader is happy that the correct decision was made by the magistrate, and that the ordeal is over for him and his family. He and his wife Sarah thank Attorney Vishnu Moodley for the excellent job he did and for the manner in which he conducted the trial. They say they had total confidence in him from the outset.

Attorney Vishnu Moodley is also very pleased with the outcome and that justice has been served. He regrets Mr Sader’s mistreatment at the hands of the police and says they will be proceeding with a hefty civil claim against the SAPS for damages suffered by Mr Sader.

The first court appearance was on the very day Mr Sader was released, and the matter was finalised today (March 2). Mr Sader was found not guilty and discharged at the close of the State’s case. He was charged with crimen injuria, resisting arrest and interfering with policemen while conducting their duties.
