Scam artist targets Newcastle hospital
A conman was apparently selling employment at Newcastle Regional Hospital, people are warned to be vigilant about job offers in exchange for money.
A fraudster was apparently using Newcastle Regional Hospital’s name to scam people.
According to Sabelo Buthelezi, hospital spokesperson, the man defrauded people by promising them employment at the hospital.
“This year alone, we have received four complaints,” he confirmed.
Mr Buthelezi explained the man’s victims were told to deposit money into a specific account to secure a position, and report to work the following morning.
However, when they ‘reported to work’, the victims discovered the hospital’s Human Resources Department knew nothing about the so-called positions.
“We would like to put it on record: Newcastle Regional Hospital does not sell employment. We follow the process of recruitment in line with the recruitment and selection policy,” Mr Buthelezi said.
Available positions in the hospital were advertised on the hospital’s notice boards, as well as on the Health Department’s website (www.kznhealth.gov.za).
According to Mr Buthelezi, the scamster used aliases when defrauding people.
“Therefore, we appeal to the community to report people who promise employment at Newcastle Hospital to the police,” he emphasised.
Members of the community, he continued, were at liberty to personally visit the hospital to check notice boards if they were looking for employment.
“Our doors are always open. People can also visit our HR department for clarity or any further details regarding recruitment at the hospital,” Mr Buthelezi concluded.
