Bakkie leaves destruction in its wake
Residents claimed to have chased the driver as he fled across neighbouring properties, yet he managed to escape.
An out-of-control vehicle sowed destruction on Victoria Road on Saturday night.
Witnesses at the scene said the bakkie sped through the Rooibok Street and Victoria Road intersection before ploughing through a palisade fence and coming to rest atop another vehicle parked in the yard. The driver then exited the bakkie and fled.
Residents claimed to have chased the driver as he fled across neighbouring properties, yet he managed to escape.
SAPS spokesman, Captain Shooz Magudulela said: “A case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened. Detectives will update our office as soon as there is a breakthrough.”
The owner of the property, Andries Nieuwoudt, expressed his upset at the incident, the second this year. The house’s main bedroom faces the road, and Mr Nieuwoudt believed if the bakkie had not smashed into his son’s car, the damage would have been far more catastrophic.
He has since approached the municipality to install speed bumps and piilars outside his home.
