Heavily armed robbers target hitchhikers
Police issued a statement urging anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the men to come forward.
Six armed men terrorised four hitchhikers in and around Newcastle in the last week. Since then, Newcastle police have warned the community not to ‘tempt fate’.

The men allegedly make use of a grey Toyota Avanza with NKR and NN registration numbers, both of which are false.
“The suspects will target and rob people at hiking spots,” said SAPS Spokesperson, Captain Shooz Magudulela. “Four people were robbed last week alone.”
Under the pretence of given hitchhikers a lift, the men have stolen a total of R6 700 in a week.
The location and alleged amounts stolen in each separate incident are as follows:
KwaMathukuza – R1 200.
Memel Road – R4 000.
Ncandu Bridge – R1 500.
Capt Magudulela concluded by warning the public to err on the side of caution at all times; the words, ‘they are dangerous’ lingering eerily.
“Contact us immediately if the men or their vehicle is spotted,” requested Capt Magudulela.
