Rapist sentenced to 23 years imprisonment

A man was recently convicted of rape by the Madadeni Regional Court.

He was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment for the crime, with an additional three year sentence for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Investigations initially began in June 2013 when the perpetrator and an accomplice attacked a couple in oSizweni, Section B. The two men raped the woman in front of her boyfriend before they fled the scene.

After an extensive two-month investigation, Detective Constable Sphamandla Masikane of the Newcastle Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses (FCS) Unit made a breakthrough.

With the assistance of Constable Sphamandla Mthembu from the K9 Unit, the suspect was arrested.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni welcomed the sentencing of the accused.

“People of the suspect’s calibre must be removed from the society. We are pleased with the sentence handed down in this matter,” she said.
