LUCAS MEYER’S grave was vandalised over the weekend. There is a tall monolith at the site in Vryheid Cemetery, with white marble inscribed panels, and each of the panels looks as if it was attacked with a sharp stone or metal rod. Fragments of marble lie on the ground below the panels, most of the pieces too small to be pieced together if there was an attempt to repair the panels.
In effect, the grave of the first President of the New Republic, the founding father of Vryheid, has been ruined for ever.
Why, is not known. Lucas Meyer died in 1902, and his grave has been respected now for well over 100 years. The obvious conclusion that one might reach, is that it is a deviant continuation of the protests against colonial era statues in other parts of the country.
Can there be any other conclusion?
