Cricketing oldies shine at world’s biggest festival

Cape Town hosted the world’s biggest cricket festival from March 22-29 and three of Dundee’s veteran cricket players were privileged to be part of this magnificent event!

Peter Johnson, Braam Cronje and Jannie Potgieter play for the Cane Rats which consists of players from the North Coast and Durban and NKZN.
Over 50 teams from Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, England and Barbados competed together with teams from South Africa. The Cane Rats played four games: Cape Town Cricket Club (the oldest cricket club in SA), Gentlemen of Nowra Eleven (Australia), Hawkes Bay Hobblers (New Zealand, whom they beat comprehensibly!) and the Australian Sri Lankans. Our local boys did the team proud and all made meaningful contributions with both bat and ball!
Said Peter, “this was truly a once-in-a-lifetime memorable experience and we urge our younger team-mates to keep in shape and to play the game for as long as possible – there’s a lot of fun to be had playing cricket!”
He added that many people think that once they are over 40 their sporting life is over.
“The average age of our Cane Rats team is around 60 and we are still going strong. We may have ‘old’ bodies but our minds are like those of 21-year-olds. I would encourage everyone to get involved in some kind of sport.” The veterans thanked Farmtrac for sponsoring the toll fee and ‘padkos’.”
