The school term at Weenen Primêr ended with a bang with the children being involved in galas, a quiz, an Easter competition and reading.
The Foundation Phase Inter-House Gala was held on Friday, March 27 and a wonderful time was had by all. The children showed off their swimming skills after only a term’s lessons watched by proud parents and teachers.
The winning house was Eland and the Junior Victrix Ludorum was won by Unathi Mgaga while the Junior Victor Ludorum was won by Jessie Lawrance. At the end of each term the children participate in a current affairs quiz and for the Intermediate and Senior Phase, questions are set on a children’s newspaper – ‘Learn the News’, which the school receives weekly.
An Easter hat and colouring in competition was held on the last day, culminating in a reading hour. This reading hour was established to involve the community and parents in reading and to encourage them to realise the importance of reading in the education of children.
Parents, siblings, friends, taxi drivers and of course gogos were invited to sit on the field with their child/ren and read for an hour. Children were read to and also given the opportunity to show off their reading skills. The response was overwhelming and it was touching to see some complete families sitting together reading. We look forward to an even bigger response for next term’s WPS Reading Hour.
