Sarel Cilliers’ Rugby Lions have just returned from two rugby tours during the holidays, playing a total of seven matches in fourteen days.
The Glencoe team, which consistently tops the local schools’ rugby log, proved their prowess on the field and won six out of their seven games. Their first match at Voortrekker Sports Day was against Weston, which they won. They then left for the Parys Rugby Festival in the Free State, coming up against some of the best opponents the schools in the Free State could offer. The Lions excellent play in their first two matches qualified them for the final, which sadly they lost by a narrow margin.
The Lions then set off for the Margate Sports School and played three more matches, easily winning the first two games to qualify once more for the final. They were pitted against Reitz High School in the final. More determined than ever, the Lions proved that their motto “Never Surrender” is an apt one. Sarel Lions were down 19/5 with ten minutes of play left; the team rallied and played some excellent running rugby to win the match 24/19, proving that their reputation is well deserved. Well done Lions!
