Sarel Cilliers High School’s first and second rugby teams participated in the Pongola Academy Rugby Festival also known as the “House of Pain” from April 24-26.
A very elated first and second rugby team departed from Glencoe in the early parts of the morning on April 24. The high-spirited boys were welcomed to a blistering hot Pongola.
The second team literally got off the bus and ran straight onto the field to show guts and determination in a nail-biting finish against Grant Leigh’s first team by winning with 17 to 12.
Sarel’s first team battled it out against a highly motivated Pongola first team and emerged victorious with a score of 29-5.
Day two was faced with zest, zeal and enthusiasm. Sarel’s two teams were very high-spirited and everyone was looking forward to showing their skills.
Sarel’s second team again played the opening match in the heat of the day and after some excellent running of the ball, came out victorious with 22 -5. The first team versed Vryheid Landbou and completely outplayed them with some excellent interplay between the forwards and the backs, winning the match with a score of 52-10.
Sincere congratulations goes out to both the first and second rugby teams from Sarel Cilliers High School for their excellent performance displayed. Their motto “never surrender” was maintained throughout the tournament. The boys were also congratulated on their outstanding behaviour.
A very big thank you to all the coaches involved in the preparation, as well as the parents for their on-going support, with a special thank you to “Oom Piet” who managed the ancient bus there and back without any incident.
Sarel Cilliers wish Tiaan and Ruan a speedy recovery and hope to see them on the battlefield soon.
Chess against Vryheid Landbou
Sarel Cilliers played against Vryheid Landbou on Wednesday afternoon, April 29.
Sarel Cilliers’ players were excited because they have not played Vryheid Landbou for a few years. Ten games were played of which Sarel won five and drew one.
The following players won their games: T. Zulu, S. Msane, N. Ndala, S. Sithole, L. Mlambo. and L. Zulu drew his game.
KZN Netball Trials
On Saturday, April 25, a few learners from Sarel Cilliers left Glencoe at 4am to go to the trials in Durban. Approximately 120 players per age group participated in the trials. Two players made it to the final rounds, but none were chosen to represent KZN.
Netball against Vryheid Landbou
On Wednesday, April 29 the annual matches against Vryheid Landbou took place. Sarel learners did their best and won most of their matches. The scores were as follows: U14: 25-2; U15: 8-9; U16: 25-8; Second Team: 21-10; First Team: 22-6. All the players are commended on their good behaviour on and off the field.
Hockey against Vryheid Landbou
The second hockey team drew their match against Vryhied Landbou 0-0. The first team won 6-0, with Megan Franz, Anele Mtshali, Deidré de Koker and Nompilo Mkhwanazi scoring.
