Wendy MaNxumalo wants to warn residents not to lend out their ears to a beggar woman in town.
“At the beginning of March, I went to Newcastle Mall, parked my car and was on my way to the bank when this woman approached me.”
Allegedly, the woman told her she was waiting for money to be released into her bank account, but could in the meantime not afford to buy food for her children.
“I first said I had no money, but after I walked a few steps, I felt bad for her children and called the woman back and gave her a R100.”
Having reached out to the woman in need, Mrs MaNxumalo soon went about her business, but the two women were destined to meet each other again.
Mrs MaNxumalo said she recently bumped into the woman in the CBD. “She approached me and gave me the same story. I don’t think she recognised me, until I asked if she was still waiting and reminded her I had given her money last month.”
“I suspect she is asking for money on a regular basis, and people need to be cautious when approached by others looking for money,” concluded Mrs MaNxumalo.
