Police raid KZN for illegal guns

More than 75 firearms have been seized by provincial SAPS teams in April and May.

A number of organised operations were conducted across KwaZulu-Natal as part of Operation Fiela, created with the intention to clean up streets and keep residents safe.

This involved raids on homes and suspected criminal dens.

Areas targeted specifically during the operation included the Greytown Cluster near Ladysmith and Dundee, where one raid yielded a cache of 24 firearms at a homestead.

Almost 40 people are in custody as of this week.

In a formal statement after the arrests, SAPS top brass congratulated security forces who had handled the operation with a ‘no nonsense’ approach.

“In the days ahead, Operation Fiyela will be going into other areas as our intelligence dictates and we will be cleaning up identified trouble areas,” said Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
