Teenagers escape serious injury
“They pushed me down, and I was on my stomach. The one guy stood on my one arm, while the other kicked me. When I turned around, I saw they had guns pointed at me.”
What had been intended as a night of fun, turned into a night of horror for two teenage girls.
On Thursday, April 30, after an exciting evening at the Vodacom Winter Festival, Nosipho Mbhata and Seme Yeh were robbed by two men.
The robbery allegedly took place at the corner of Grysbok and Oribi streets, while the girls were waiting for a friend to take them home.
They said they had left the show grounds at 11pm but their arranged lift had not turned up. “We then started walking to the friend’s house with some other friends. The friends eventually turned back and we waited outside our friend’s house,” Nosipho said.
A man with dreadlocks apparently approached the girls and demanded their cellphones. Nosipho gave her phone to the man, but Seme started running.
Another man helped the first perpetrator and caught Seme.

She had no option but to hand her phone over to them.
The victims’ cries for help were too late to prevent the culprits’ escape.
The police attended to the scene and are currently investigating the crime.
Thankful to be alive, the robbery has left the victims more aware of the dangers of walking alone at night.
“If I do walk at night again, I will have to be more cautious of what happens around me as the guy with the dreadlocks must have followed us. I also now realise how bad the crime is,” Seme said.
“I have learned not to walk at night,” Nosipho concluded.
