Investigation launched after N11 hijack attempt

A man from Polokwane stared death in the face as he was gunned down by would-be hijackers on the N11 on May 7.
The incident occurred in broad daylight shortly after 9am, hauling into question the gall of the brazen ‘bandits’.
SAPS spokesperson, Captain Shooz Magudulela said the suspects drove a white Audi A4.
“It is alleged the suspects tried to ‘block’ the truck driven by the man. They then proceeded to shoot at the driver.”

The wounded man’s brother and a second passenger drove him to the hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. They contacted police shortly thereafter.
Doctor Relationship Manager at Mediclinic Newcastle, Mariette Classen issued a short statement on the day of the shooting to confirmed the victim had been stabilised, but remained in a critical condition.
Doctors conducted a CT scan and concluded the patient did not require surgery to remove the bullet.
As of May 11, the victim was still in ICU, but was in much better condition. It later became necessary for him to undergo surgery to remove the bullet that had become lodged in his chest.
“The patient is mobile and was discharged on Tuesday morning,” said Mrs Classen.
Chairman for the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Councillor Alex Liu confirmed the victim was in Newcastle on business. He described the incident as shocking and urged police to ‘arrest the perpetrators before they kill someone’.
“We would like to thank the SAPS and the private hospital for their prompt response, as well as Mr Ferdie Alberts who also came to assist us,” concluded Cllr Liu.
A case of attempted murder was opened, however no arrests have been made yet.
The incident remains subject to police investigation.
