Smoking Dragon gets pulses racing

Taking place from May 22 to 24, the Smoking Dragon Festival is hosted by Amphitheatre Backpackers, a lodge which gained popularity through its annual Smoking Dragon New Year’s Festival.

Music and adrenaline to celebrate the beauty of the Drakensberg.

This is the core around which the Smoking Dragon Adrenaline Festival is set, a unique event which adds a new spin to the traditional idea of music festivals.

The gorgeous Amphitheatre World Heritage site is the appropriate backdrop.

Taking place from May 22 to 24, the Smoking Dragon Festival is hosted by Amphitheatre Backpackers, a lodge which gained popularity through its annual Smoking Dragon New Year’s Festival.

Festival director, Ilsa Roberts explained further.

“There are so many organisations in the northern Drakensberg area that have such wonderful offerings for adventure seekers and nature lovers, that we decided to combine music and adventure into one big creative festival for everyone from 0 to 100 to enjoy.”

Ms Roberts said the idea was to bring like-minded music- and outdoor-lovers together.

For the thrill seekers, activities include skydiving, rock climbing, paragliding, abseiling, mountain biking, trail running, micro lighting, quad biking, off-road Segway, canopy tours, paintball, hiking to the highest waterfall in Africa, kloofing, white water rafting, bass fishing and hot air ballooning.

Festival-goers have access to the above, but will be encouraged to also explore other adventure sports across the area.

In terms of music, a range of reggae, folk and Afro funk sounds will include the likes of Stelth Ulvang of the Lumineers, Shortstraw, The Tidal Waves, Champions of the Sonarverse, Veranda Panda, Fools of Fate, The Accidentals, The Gus Brown Band, Gavin Ferguson, Hezron Chetty, The Meditators, Inkhonjane No Bheseni, DJ Invizable and DJ Dubmasta China.

“Music starts at 5pm on Friday and Saturday, after all the adrenaline has been used up, and ends at midnight so sportsmen and women are guaranteed their much-needed sleep to get up and enjoy more fun the next day.”

Smoking Dragon also features the usual food vendors, clean toilets and showers and full bars.
