Pupils to be the kings of chess

Could Newcastle be hiding the next greatest chess master?

Aiming to develop chess among the youh, Blackrock Casino has for the second year sponsored two schools in the area to participate in Tsogo Sun’s Moves for Life.

The initiative kicked off on Saturday, with approximately 50 school pupils from local high schools and primary schools participating.

Moves for Life is aimed at instilling a passion for mathematics, science and language in children and has grown exponentially from 10 schools in Gauteng in 2010, to 120 schools nationwide.

Moves for Life unlocks the cognitive potential in children through structured chess activities within two sub-programmes, namely MiniChess for children between 5 and 8 years old, and MasterMoves for children older than 8.

Hlabana Primary and Nokukhanya Primary schools in Madadeni and oSizweni respectively, will benefit from the programme, specifically Grades 1 to 3.

Blackrock Marketing Manager, Veneshrie Chetty, said the casino’s donation would cover training materials for the year, a tutor and teacher training.

What truly made the event exciting was that Saturday’s event was the first heat in the selection of top players to compete in the upcoming nationals.

“There will be a league held every month and the top players will be chosen to play at nationals,” Mrs Chetty explained.
