BREAKING NEWS: Oval Track burglars speed away in stolen vehicle
The Oval Track was burglarised, apparently for the fourth time in a year.
The Oval Track club house was broken into last night, June 2.
Six steel tables, a number of plastic chairs, and a 1400 Datsun bakkie were stolen.
“We used the bakkie around the track, parked it in the club house and even took the battery out to immobilise it, but they took it anyway,” said Boet Buys from the Oval Track committee.
It is speculated the burglars loaded the tables and chairs into the bakkie before escaping over an embankment surrounding the track alongside Hardwick Street.
Adding to the insult, the perpetrators left the clubhouse in a chaotic state.
Items that were not stolen were left in a state of disarray.
“They even made a fire in the club house, obviously to see what they were doing,” said Mr Buys.
Mr Buys said this was the fourth burglary in a year. “That is why we only keep the essentials at the club now.”
Disappointed that crime has struck their premises once more, Mr Buys said the Oval Track was a non profit organisation and monies brought in were just enough to maintain the grounds.
“If anyone could assist us with tables and chairs, it would be appreciated.”
While the burglary has left a sour taste in his mouth, Mr Buys said squatters also trespassed on the premises on a regular basis and he speculated they might have had something to do with the burglary.
“On the Friday night before our last race, someone broke into our ticket office and it looks like they had slept in it. On the Saturday, May 30, someone broke into the ticket office again and by the looks of it, someone had slept in the ticket office again last night,” he fumed.
The matter was reported to the police and is being investigated.
