Vryheid and Mondlo schools tackle dangers of underage gambling

SARGF has reached 13 schools in Vryheid and Mondlo to educate learners about underage gambling risks.

The South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF) has taken its National Responsible Gambling Programme, under the theme ‘Taking Risks Wisely: School Edition’, to schools in Vryheid and Mondlo to educate learners about the dangers of illegal underage gambling.

Programme reaches 13 schools

The programme has reached about 13 schools in the two areas, where learners were taught about the risks and consequences associated with gambling at a young age.

Learners warned about gambling risks

Speaking during a presentation at Bhekuzulu Primary School, Tina Ludidi said that although underage gambling is prohibited by law, it has increasingly become attractive to children.

She said some children may turn to gambling as a way of trying to supplement their families’ incomes, particularly as many South African households continue to face financial difficulties. Adolescents may also turn to gambling as a way of coping with stress, peer pressure or seeking excitement and social acceptance among their peers.

Peer pressure linked to underage gambling

Lebohang Seoheng, Advocacy, Communication and Prevention Manager at the SARGF and custodian of the National Responsible Gambling Programme, said several factors contribute to young people becoming involved in gambling.

“Peer pressure, access to illegal underage gambling, exposure to gambling culture, and the normalisation of risky behaviour all play a role in drawing young people into gambling activities.’’

He said the programme aims to reduce gambling-related harm while equipping learners who may already be affected with coping strategies.

Support available for affected young people

Seoheng said the programme also provides support to young people who may be affected by illegal underage gambling or problem gambling within their households.

“This programme focuses on offering free support to young people who may be directly impacted by illegal underage gambling or the harmful effects of problem gambling within their homes.”

Free and confidential counselling

The National Responsible Gambling Programme offers free and confidential counselling to those who need assistance.

Learners and members of the public can contact the toll-free counselling line on 0800 006 008 or chat with counsellors on WhatsApp at 076 675 0710.
