Women build confidence through self-defence session
Women gained skills while donating essential items to a local mother and baby project.
The Newcastle Lions Club hosted The Woman in the Mirror self-defence session at Arborpark Primary School on August 15, bringing together 34 participants for a morning focused on confidence, awareness, empowerment and practical self-defence skills.
The session was facilitated by two experienced facilitators, Leanne en Deon Claassen.

Participants reflect on their own strength
The event began with a motivational talk centred on the theme ‘The Woman in the Mirror’.
Participants were encouraged to think about a woman they admire and reflect on the qualities and values that make her inspirational.
The focus was then turned inward, challenging the ladies to recognise those same qualities within themselves and to be proud of the women they are.
The message was simple but powerful: we are often quick to recognise the strength, courage and resilience in other women, but sometimes forget to acknowledge those qualities in ourselves.
The motivational message provided a meaningful introduction to the practical session that followed.
Participants were taught self-defence techniques and paired up to practice the various moves with one another. This provided an opportunity to put the techniques into practice in a supportive environment while building confidence and awareness.
The positive response from the ladies was a highlight of the day.
Feedback ranged from “I learnt a lot” and “I had fun” to comments describing the session as valuable and worthwhile. The combination of an inspirational message and practical learning made the event both meaningful and enjoyable.
Each participant was also given a goody bag, medal and certificate after the session.
Donations support mothers and babies
The session also supported the Newcastle Lions Club’s ‘Mother and Baby Project’.
Participants were asked to bring clothing for newborns or baby products, and generous donations were received. These included nappies, wet wipes, creams, baby clothing, blankets, toiletries, baby food and other essential items.
The event was made possible through the commitment of the members involved, facilitators and volunteers, as well as the generous support of sponsors Melo’s Pub & Grill and Mzinyathi Scrap Metals, whose contributions helped make the morning a success.
Security was provided by Chess Security, while first-aid support was provided by TRIVS.
“The Woman in the Mirror was ultimately about more than learning self-defence; it was about reminding every participant that she is valuable, capable and worthy of protecting.”
