WATER: Mall ‘dries up’ gushing sprinkler

A sprinkler inside Newcastle Mall's parking lot turned into an unexpected water feature, which had to be dried up.

An innocent sprinkler turned into a high powered fountain on Tuesday night at Newcastle Mall, watering the parking lot more than the plants.

With Newcastle experiencing an extremely dry winter, the water jetting out of the mall’s irrigation system could have been viewed as water wastage.

However, the wastage proved to be minimal due to the Mall’s management team addressing the problem as timeously as possible.

“It was a burst pipe and we received photos of the leak at 8.10pm. The matter was reported to the maintenance manager immediately and by 9.10pm, the pipe had been repaired,” said Beaulah Rajkumar, Newcastle Mall’s marketing manager.

Furthermore, Mrs Rajkumar said due to the dry period Newcastle was currently experiencing, the management team took proactive steps to ensure no water was wasted.

“We have reduced our garden irrigation. Also, we have an irrigation dam at the back of the complex which is used for the garden. None of the water from the dam comes from the municipality, and to date the dam has never run dry,” she emphasised.

To ensure water is saved, the community is encouraged to report water leaks to the municipality’s water services department on 086 014 4144.
