Madiba in fibre glass in time for Mandela Day

The work is 1,8 metres in length and offers a great likeness to Madiba.

With Mandela Day to be celebrated on July 18, local artist Deez Rampersad is hopeful that there is a willing buyer for his new framed sculpture of the icon who passed away in December 2013.

The work is 1,8 metres in length and offers a great likeness to Madiba.

“I first made a mould and then completed the work in fibre glass using only my hands. It took me a long time to complete but it was certainly worth the effort – I feel this is my best work to date.”

Deez previously produced The Big Five from paper mache. This self-taught artist is also keen to start manufacturing headboards for extra income.

He describes himself as a welder, boilermaker, shopfitter and artist.

“I do everything I can to keep food on the table for my family,”
Deez explained. He operates from his small home on Cornhill Street which he says is now a crime-infested area.

“I would also like to teach young people artwork. This will help to keep them off the streets because everyone knows that there is virtually no recreational facilities in our small town.”

Anyone who would like to chat to Deez can contact him at 084 805 8100.
