Barbara Elliot has led Lions Club since its inception in 2012. A new leader has taken over the reins of the club, ready to lead the pride to the next level.
Lize Smith was inaugurated as the club’s president on Saturday night at a heartfelt induction ceremony at The Cannon.
As Ms Smith prepared to take on the daunting task of leading the community-based organisation, Ms Elliot related how much her three year stint as president had meant to her.
“I have grown so much and had the opportunity to change people’s lives for the better, which has always been my passion.”
As president, Ms Elliot led the Lions in charity-based projects which included supplying less fortunate children school shoes and school clothing, purchasing a bed for a youngster, as well as building a crèche in Madadeni.
She said one of the most popular projects of the Lions Club was that of the election of Miss Newcastle.
“It has been a wonderful journey and looking at our projects, we have done some amazing stuff,” Ms Elliot said.
Ms Smith’s first speech as president was one of thanks, as she extended her gratitude to Ms Elliot and fellow Lions members.
“Thank you for believing and trusting in me. Barbara has been in the chair for three years and was the ideal person to start the organisation and is a role model to me. I really have big shoes to fill,” she said.
She was determined to continue the legacy behind the meaning of the Lions Club; the legacy of reaching out to the less fortunate and bringing relief.
“ I am passionate about growing the club and getting more members. There are lots of dynamic women in the community. Let’s give them a platform to help others.”
Ms Smith planned to make the club more visible in the community.
“Newcastle needs to know we are here and that we are here to stay,” she emphasised.
In conclusion, she said if the Lions Club was to continue as a movement of compassion, she would need members’ support.
“I cannot do it on my own, but as a club we can make a difference.”
