Armed robbery anguish

Community urged to never travel or walk alone.

Community members fears have run high as gun-wielding men have attacked Dundee in the past week.

Three people, in three different incidents, all in the same week, have been targeted.

The first incident took place on July 12 during the night. A man had been walking alone towards Sibongile, when he was approached by two men in a Toyota Conquest. The driver of the Toyota drove menancingly close to the man and proceeded to follow him, before coming to a sudden halt.

The two occupants of the Toyota promptly got out of the vehicle and pounced on the unsuspecting man. One of the two men wielded a gun and the pair robbed the victim of a firearm and a wallet with R380 in it. The pair thereafter sped off.

The robbers are still at large and police are investigating.

The second armed robbery occurred on July 13 on the Dundee/Nquthu road. A man was transporting cigarettes in a van when he was accosted by two people driving a Honda. The masked pair approached the victim and pointed a firearm at him.

They then forced the man into their vehicle and sped off. They soon abandoned the victim in Kingsley and made off with the vehicle and R2 000 worth of cigarettes.

A case of armed robbery is being investigated.

The third incident happened on July 16 opposite Tri-Star in Dundee.

A man had been sitting in his vehicle when two men approached him and asked for a lift to the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI).

Upon nearing the RTI, one robber got out and walked around the vehicle scouting out for possible witnesses while the other wielded a firearm and threatened the driver.

The robber who was on lookout got back in the car and drove off while the victim was made to crouch down. They then dropped him off at Elandslaagte, and the robbers drove away with his car.

The victim hitchhiked to a nearby Police Station and reported the incident. The case is currently undergoing investigation.

Communications Officer, Captain V Mbense urged the public not to travel or walk alone and to try as far as possible to be accompanied by someone else.
