Changing lives one toy at a time

As part of her 67 minutes for Mandela Day tribute, Miss Newcastle visited the Paediatric Ward at Mediclinic Newcastle

A rose among the thorns; Ashley-Rose Viljoen signifies glamour and grace.

As part of her 67 minutes for Mandela Day tribute, Miss Newcastle visited the Paediatric Ward at Mediclinic Newcastle on July 17.

Presenting each nurse with a picture-perfect peach rose, Ashley-Rose thanked them for their contribution to the field, reminding them how valuable they are.

“Mandela spent most of his life helping other people, people who couldn’t help themselves. Basically, we wanted to show appreciation to the nurses who care for children,” she explained.

A bag chock-full of toys in hand, she spent time with the patients and their parents, getting to know their unique stories.

The toys she handpicked for the children, made putting a smile on their faces easy as pie.

“It was heart-warming when the children smiled at me, but also saddening to see them in pain, knowing I can’t heal them. I am very grateful for the work the nurses do daily.”

Without revealing too much, Ashley-Rose said she was getting her plans in order to host a Cuppa for CANSA.

“In addition, we are organising projects to do with Madadeni health care facilities.”

Ashley-Rose said she valued the true meaning behind celebrating the legacy of Madiba.

“Mandela proved to us that even in the toughest of situations, every individual has the ability to change the world. I believe Mandela Day is there to encourage people to follow in his footsteps and help where they can,” she concluded.

She thanked Nadia Roux for arranging the visit, as well as the Lions Club for its generous contribution.

Her elegance and finesse only make the glamorous ‘goddess’ all the more alluring. High heels aside, her contribution to the community reminds one that charity is the greatest gift one could ever give!
