Hockey stars do Ferrum proud
Ferrum High School took on nine teams from across the province in the finals of the Spar KwaZulu-Natal Regional Hockey Tournament from July 25 to July 26.
One team, one dream.
Ferrum High School took on nine teams from across the province in the finals of the Spar KwaZulu-Natal Regional Hockey Tournament from July 25 to July 26.
The girls did Newcastle proud, finishing fifth after facing off against some of the top hockey squads. A formidable team from Durban Girls’ College claimed the title after a nail-biting match against Pietermaritzburg Girls High.
Leading the team from Ferrum on the day was 18-year-old, Ruvette Schoeman. The teen made her debut to the tournament in her first year of high school. She is the only player in the history of the Spar Regional Tournament to have played in all five of the grand finals.
“The tournament is most certainly the highlight of my hockey season each year,” she said. “Being part of such a successful tournament has taught me a lot about the beautiful sport of field hockey and how much it can still grow.”
Ruvette is set on studying Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Pretoria next year, but does not plan to give up hockey.
“Hockey is my stress reliever, but I also enjoy spending time outdoors and listening to music.”
This year was the second time Ferrum finished in the fifth position. They scooped the number five spot in 2012 during the second-ever regional tournament.
Ansie Joubert from St Dominic’s Academy earned her strips as one of the top umpires in the province. She officiated at the finals, exuding confidence in her role as Most Promising Umpire.
Congratulations to Ansie and the team from Ferrum High School for their commitment and determination on the turf. If they keep up the good work, next year will certainly be their year!
