Uniting to save the rhino

St Dominic’s Academy Newcastle and Hilldrop Heritage School began a fundraising drive in 2014, to raise money for the plight of the rhinos.

A club also was created, which pupils could join to support the fund.

Pupils were able to purchase a badge and sticker from the school fund, St Dominic’s quickly raising R9 000, while Hilldrop managed to accumulate R1 000.

This brought the total to an awesome R10 000!

This amount was handed over to Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife rangers, who will use this money to pay for two transmitters.

The transmitters were placed in two rhino’s horns for tracking purposes.

“Teaching children to feel for the environment and to care what happens to our beautiful animals is an important part of school,” school representatives said.

“Being able to make a difference in this way, makes us really feel proud of the commitment from pupils of both schools.”
