Taxi bosses back down with R1 increase withdrawn
As of 5pm today, ALL taxi fees will return to the previous amount
In a media statement, Emnambithi/Ladysmith Municipality announced that the ‘R1 taxi tariff increase’ has been suspended until further notice.
Ladysmith Mayor Vincent Madlala and councillors have met with the Klip River Taxi Association, the Department of Transport, Community Safety & Liaison, SANTACO, as well as other stakeholders in the transport sector, to discuss the volatile situation resulting from the taxi fee increase.
Negotiations have been ongoing since yesterday and a resolution has been taken that a taxi fee increase will be suspended until further notice.
As of 5pm today, all taxi fees will return to the previous amount.
The stakeholders of the transport sector are pleading with the community to please open all roads to allow them to come into communities and present the outcome of the meeting
The delegation of Mayor Madlala, councillors, KRTA, SAPS and the Department of Transport, Community Safety & Liaison and SANTACO will begin by addressing the community of St Chad’s, then move to Ezakheni, Steadville, Roosboom, Burford, Bluebank and Driefontein respectively.
While the situation is still volatile, roads should start being cleared over the next few hours as news filters through at grassroots level that the protests are over. People are, however, warned to check before making travel plans, with some areas only expected to open fully by tomorrow morning.
