Celebrating the New South Africa

Last Wednesday, Majuba TVET College’s Madadeni Campus hosted an event in recognition of Madiba’s role in South Africa.

Nashveer Nemesar from Majuba TVET, explained the celebration was twofold.

“We celebrated Nelson Mandela’s release from prison 25 years ago and the 60 years of the Freedom Charter’s existence,” he said.

The Freedom Charter adopted on 26 June 1955, and Mandela’s release from prison in February 1990, marked the first steps in abolishing apartheid and ensuring equality of all people.

At Wednesday’s event, guests learned more about the Freedom Charter and how it changed the lives of South Africans.

Nhlanhla Dimba, Principal of Mthashana TVET College, and one of the guests speakers, emphasised the importance of embracing the Freedom Charter and the benefits of education.

“There are some things from the apartheid system we have learned and need to leave behind. We do not share, neither is there team work and partnership, as we were taught this was cheating,” he said.

While giant strides had been taken in breaking down cultural barriers like the acceptance of inter-relationships, the abolition of pass laws and access to medical services, it was through working together South Africa would truly heal, he said.

Dr Zanele Bridgette Gasa, National Planning Commissioner, represented Parliament.

She gave an interesting talk on the Freedom Charter and its influence on the life of Madiba.

The proceedings concluded with a multimedia presentation on the life of Nelson Mandela.
