Debauchery mars modern e-park

Like other similar parks on Crawford Street and at the Amanath Centre, the park boasts modern equipment and a streamlined look. Upon closer inspection, the rot of debauchery has set in.

At first glance, the Ebony Street e-park might appear tame.

Like other similar parks on Crawford Street and at the Amanath Centre, the park boasts modern equipment and a streamlined look.

Upon closer inspection, the rot of debauchery has set in.

Towards the rear of the park, residents complained, adults have caused the area to be littered with broken alcohol bottles and condoms.

Lack of entrance control is said to have compounded problems.

The fancy wrought-iron gate at the entrance to the Ebony Street park stands open, with no security personnel monitoring comings and goings.

It is unclear why an investment such as the e-park was left unattended.

Elsewhere within the park’s confines, four deep holes have been created from where a certain piece of equipment was removed recently.

These holes were not marked or filled in, and pose possible danger.

Near the sand pit, a piece of metal piping with a sharp edge has been discarded, a few steps away from the splintered remains of a road sign.

Heaped gravel and sand can be found near the entrance.

Water has pooled in the blocked basin, where bricks appear to have been smashed free by vandals.

The carousel leans drunkenly from its damaged cement base.

The above matters were reported to the Parks Department of Newcastle Municipality last week, where staff stated a supervisor would be dispatched.

Danger tape would also be placed, the employee added.

A brief trip to the Ebony Street park early this week revealed municipal workers had been dispatched by the municipality.

Anyone vandalism or misuse of the park should be reported to Protection Services (034 328 4700).
