Madadeni High Court recently sentenced Mandla Ngema and Bongani Buthelezi to 40 years’ imprisonment each for murder and robbery.

Mondlo police received a tip-off regarding a murder at a home in the Bhekumthetho area at about 3am. Upon arrival, police discovered the lifeless body of 61-year-old, Thembani Masondo.

The victim was reportedly strangled to death. Her cellphone and bank cards were stolen before the suspects fled the scene.

Detectives worked tirelessly to track down the accused. Their hard work finally paid off when the culprits were arrested and the stolen items were recovered.

According to police, the accused received word that the victim had obtained an undisclosed amount of money as a lobola payment.

“We welcome the heavy sentence handed down to the accused as this will serve as a strong warning to those who target our vulnerable women,” said Major Thulani Zwane. “The sentence came at the right time as we were celebrating the Women’s Month.

He condemned violence and abuse against women in the strongest possible terms and thanked police for their efforts.

“We highly appreciate the good work done by our members by gathering enough evidence that led to the conviction of the accused,” concluded Maj. Zwane.
