Money scams hit CBD
Playing on people’s sympathy, he asks for money and then vanishes with his loot
Scams have been hitting businesses hard in the central business district (CBD) lately.
This is according to business owners in Murchison Street. According to them, a well-dressed and well-spoken Indian male in his 30s is going around targeting businesses and also pensioners.
The man says his car has broken down and he needs money to tow it. Sounding very plausible, he assures his victims that he will give them double the money back when he returns. As you can imagine, he leaves and is never seen again.
On other occasions, he claims to have furniture and household appliances up for sale, and shows unsuspecting victims photos of the said items. He tells them to give him a deposit and he will return with the items, at which time they must give him the rest of the money. Again, he disappears with the deposit money and does not return.
According to one of the businesses that have been targeted, he is also known to produce a melted bank card, saying that it doesn’t work after being burnt by the sun on the dashboard of his car. Playing on people’s sympathy, he asks for money and then vanishes with his loot.
Business owners and individuals are urged to be aware that this is going on and not to give this man any money.
