Rapist attempts to buy victim’s silence for R1

A two year long court battle has proven that R1 will not buy a rapist his victim’s silence.

Mandlakayise Mbatha was sentenced to life imprisonment on Wednesday, September 16, for raping a seven-year-old girl in oSizweni.

The incident took place in 2013, when the child was playing with friends.

She was allegedly lured away by Mbatha, who raped her in a nearby toilet.

After violating the youngster, he gave her R1 and told her to remain silent about what had happened.

However, later that day, while the child was bathing, her mother realised something was wrong.

When she was questioned, her mother found out what happened.

Mbatha was then arrested and charged accordingly.

Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, applauded the Newcastle FCS detectives for thoroughly investigating the case and presenting a well prepared docket to Madadeni Regional Court.

“We will always make sure that criminals who prey on vulnerable women and children are kept behind bars,” she said.
