World champion pilot in action over Ladysmith

Warning: 9meg video of pilots in action over Ladysmith

As world champion aerobatic pilot Michel Leusch loses control of his plane over the skies of Ladysmith on Saturday, for a person who once openly admitted to being petrified of heights, he shows no fear.

The 33-year-old South African and world champion is at one with his plane as it tumbles out of control. The loss of control is, however, deliberate – a spin, part of a set routine of manoeuvres high above Ladysmith airfield, as he practices for the SA Championships to be held in Ladysmith next month.

Close to 30 pilots and planes will descend on Ladysmith next month.

This story will be updated with a full, exclusive interview with the world champ on Friday.
