Let’s Read campaign kicks off in Newcastle

An ambitious initiative to collect 1 000 books has sparked the interest of avid readers across Newcastle.
Let’s Read is an up-and-coming campaign spearheaded by Nadia Aziz, in partnership with Outreach South Africa. The programme seeks to promote literacy among children between the ages of six and 10.
“The main aim is distribute books in the township areas, where there are children who cannot afford to buy books. We want to bring reading to the poorer areas of Newcastle,” explained Mrs Aziz.
The Newcastle Municipal Library jumped at the opportunity, and donated about 350 books in support of the cause.
“I’ve had a few people in the community donate already,” she said. “I am focusing on Siyahlala-la, but if there are other families who come forward and ask for help, I certainly will.”
Mrs Aziz is open to distribute books in other areas. However, this will be determined by the support received from the community.
Growing up, Mrs Aziz had a sizable book collection, and hopes to instill a similar love of reading in the mind of her four-year-old daughter. She is a firm believer in the maxim, If you read books, you live several lifetimes. If you don’t, you only live one.
“These children live in such poor conditions, and cannot afford the luxuries we enjoy. I want give them the escape that comes with reading.”
The handover is scheduled to take place on November 29. Mrs Aziz has since approached local service organisations to assist her in making a success of the day.
Several community members came forward and suggested there be ‘story time’ for the children. Mrs Aziz later confirmed there would be a reading, giving the youngsters something to look forward to in addition to their new books.
On behalf of the community she seeks to empower, Mrs Aziz thanked all those who have pledged their support to date. She reiterated she does not expect the community to donate brand new books.
“Everybody deserves a book. This is an opportunity for us to give back,” concluded Mrs Aziz.
