22-year-old sentenced for firearm possession charge

The magazine of the pistol was loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition

Sphamandla Pallo Gamede (32 years) was sentenced in the  Ezakheni Magistrate’s Court on Friday, September 25, for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

He was sentenced to 5 years’ imprisonment on a count of possession of an illegal firearm and 1 year on the ammunition charge. The court further declared the accused unfit to possess a firearm.

On October 16 last year, police officers from the Ezakheni Crime Prevention Unit were performing duties and received information about a person being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in Ezakheni E-Section. They went to the address and recovered a 9mm pistol from the accused, which had its serial number erased.

The magazine of the pistol was loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition.

The accused was immediately arrested and the case docket opened and registered at Ezakheni SAPS for further investigation.

All the police officers involved in the recovery and investigation of the case were commended by Ezakheni station commander Colonel VS Dludla for their efforts in ridding our community of unlicensed firearms.
