Fighting to represent South Africa

The JKA Africa Cup was held at Ellis Park in Johannesburg recently.

This was the first time the prestigious event was held in an African country, and competitors were hosted from across the African continent, including Uganda, Egypt, Botswana and Angola.

Included in this event were 18 students of Northern KwaZulu-Natal JKA.

While some students made it past the first round and others made the quarter-finals, only three advanced to the final round.

“The competition was tough, as only the top four from each country were eligible to enter the tournament, run on a knock-out basis. This meant most divisions had more than 16 competitors,” explained Sensei, Johan Swart.

Cailin Scott achieved a bronze medal in kata, sequence of movements, and Jamie Steenkamp battled her way to a bronze in kumite, or sparring.

Anthony van der Watt was placed second, earning silver for kumite in his division.

“It is an honour and privilege to represent South Africa at such a prestigious event, but it is made that much more special when students are able to bring home a medal for their country.”

Sensei Johan congratulated all karateka on their character, effort and etiquette at the tournament, and applauded Anthony, Cailin and Jamie on their wonderful achievements.

“We wish them well in their future endeavors in the art and sport of karate.”
