MEC welcomes arrest of cop in taxi shooting
Three suspects, including a member of the SAPS based in Gauteng, are expected to appear in court this week
MEC for Transport, Community Safety & Liaison Mr Willies Mchunu has commended police for the swift arrest of three suspects, including a policeman, for a taxi shooting in Bergville.
The police report reveals that three assailants drove up in a Toyota Corolla in KwaDukuza, Bergville, and opened fire on occupants who were travelling in a bakkie this morning. It is believed that two men were shot and killed, while a woman sustained serious injuries. Though the reason for the shooting is still being investigated, it is believed that the two men who died were taxi operators in the area.
Three firearms, including an R5 rifle and a 9mm pistol, and ammunition were seized.
The three suspects face charges of murder, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
The suspects, including one believed to be a member of the SAPS based in Gauteng, are expected to appear in the Bergville Magistrate’s Court this week.
Commenting on the incident, MEC Mchunu expressed his disappointment that a police officer, who is supposed to protect citizens, is linked to such a callous murder.
“We commend the good work and swift reaction by the police. The proactive nature of the police in our province is helping in apprehending all those who are behind taxi violence in the province.
“We are, however, disturbed that one of the suspects is a police officer, who is based in Gauteng. We expect police officers to lead in upholding the rule of law. Therefore, we will monitor developments in this case and ensure that the necessary steps are taken against the suspects.
“We further call on all police in the province to maintain integrity and loyalty to the citizens and the Constitution in the execution of their work,” said MEC Mchunu.
