House burgled in Mahogany Crescent
According to the burglary victims, about R100,000 worth of valuables were stolen
A house was broken into in Mahogany Crescent on Friday just after midday.
Children on a nearby field say they saw the alleged perpetrators, but thought they were building contractors. The children say one of the burglars was sitting on the roof of the house at about 12.30pm and one was standing next to the house.
It seems that the burglars got in through a kitchen window that had been left open. Having taken what they wanted, the thieves tried to get out of the house by forcing open a security gate with a metal bar, but were not successful. They ended up using the kitchen window through which they had gained access to the house.
Police were notified of the break-in and were at the scene that afternoon. Fingerprint Department officials combed the crime scene on Saturday.
According to the burglary victims, about R100,000 worth of valuables were stolen during the break-in.
Residents say they are disappointed that the security camera in their area is not working. “Is it just there as a Christmas decoration?” fumed one resident. “It’s a waste of ratepayers’ money, that’s what it is!”
Residents also complain that even if they call the police, the SAPS allegedly do not respond timeously to this area.
The burglary victim urges other residents to phone the police immediately if anyone comes around wanting to sell stuff.
